About

Joey Scouts is the first section of Scouts and is for young people aged 5-8.

The Joey Scout section focuses on fun and friendship and is a gentle introduction to a world of Adventures through Scouting. Joey Scouts can:

  • Discover what challenge means for them
  • Explore the world around them
  • Start to be active in the community
  • Share new adventures with others
  • Start to develop outdoor skills
  • Discover what teamwork means
  • Begin to learn how to lead activities
  • Participate in a Unit Council, supported by adults.

Joey Scouts form small teams called a Patrol. Working together in your Patrol, you will discover lots of different, fun, exciting and challenging adventures outdoors. A young person can join anytime after their 5th birthday, provided they are attending school full time.

Cub Scouts continues the journey from Joey Scouts and is for young people aged 8–11.

The Cub Scout section focuses on exploring the outdoors, setting challenges and encountering new experiences! Cub Scouts can:

  • Create their own paths
  • Develop their sense of place
  • Explore the world around them
  • Encounter new experiences
  • Expand their perspectives
  • Determine their own adventures
  • Build upon friendships.

You’ll go on camps with your Unit, and you might attend a Cuboree camp with hundreds of other Cub Scouts! As well as learning things like how to use a compass, you’ll go on bushwalks, bike trips and have the chance to do things like sailing, canoeing, abseiling and sometimes even flying!

Scouts is for young people aged 11–14 years. Scouts develop more complex outdoor skills in a fun and active environment.

The Scouts section offers an amazing variety of activities designed to teach important life skills to get Scouts social and active! Scouts can:

  • Experience big changes
  • Explore their changing sense of self
  • Focus more on peer networks
  • Help the transition from primary to secondary school
  • Find new ways to express themselves
  • Explore and form their personal identity.

Scouts, as a section, focuses on allowing young people to develop their confidence and teaches them how to work as part of a team. Scouts learn essential outdoor safety skills as well as participate in a variety of physical and intellectual challenges.

Venturer Scouts is for young people aged 14–17 years. Venturer Scouts experience more independence and responsibility.

As a Venturer Scout, you’ll have the space to have fun learning and developing your own character at your own pace. Venturer Scouts can:

  • Discover and explore independence
  • Broaden their perspectives
  • Secure their interests and priorities in life
  • Learn to rely strongly on peer support
  • Take on more responsibilities
  • Seek purpose, challenge and risk

The Unit’s activities are planned and run by the Venturer Scouts themselves – which means they are tailored to the requirements and interests of members. As a Venturer Scout, you may find yourself exploring wilderness across Australia, camping above the snowline or diving on coral reefs. You could be abseiling into a limestone cave or climbing a sheer rock face. Perhaps you’ll learn white water kayaking or ride your mountain bike on an expedition across real mountains.

Venturer Scouts progress to the Rover Scout Section after turning 18 however, Venturer Scouts who turn 18 during Year 12 can wait to progress until they have completed Year 12 as long as they have a verified Working With Children Check and National Police clearance.
